Discrimination in America
Discrimination is a huge issue in society against many ethnicities. But what is Discrimination? Discrimination is the unfair treatment of people and groups based on their race, gender, age, or sexual orientation. Discrimination can hurt people’s rights simply because of who they are and the color of their skin or religion. Discrimination can happen anywhere and to anyone. But this writing focuses on the people that get discriminated against the most in American society like African Americans and Muslims.

Many people from all over the world believe that when they arrive in America, they will be able to live the American dream, but in fact, it will be a nightmare. Many groups, including those who have lived in America their whole lives, face prejudice when they arrive. For example, blacks are seen as violent, whereas Mexicans are targeted for bringing drugs into the country, and lastly Muslims are viewed for causing terrorist attacks across the world.

I would admit that discrimination has been a part of my life since I was a child. Many Muslims have faced prejudice and injustice since the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. Since they are Muslim, they are often blamed for the attack and labeled terrorists. Before moving to the United States of America, I imagined that my life would improve and change. When I arrived, though, it was a whole different story. Discrimination began when I went to school, Students sometimes make jokes about explosives and 9/11; at first, I didn’t take these jokes seriously

because I knew the majority of the students were kidding. However, I was shocked when a student made a racist remark and the teacher overheard it. I was expecting the instructor to get the kid in trouble when. But she instead laughed with him. According to the pew research center for discrimination and conflicts in U.S society, it stated that “A large majority of Americans (82%) say Muslims in the United States face discrimination – with 57% saying they face “a lot” of discrimination.” This shows that Muslims are the most group that is being discriminated against in American society. It also shows that people get influenced by what they see in the news, for example when they see the conflicts in the middle east on tv they start to see Muslims as terrorists for causing these wars.

African Americans are another race that I believe is treated unfairly in society. From social media, I keep seeing police brutality towards African Americans. In February 2020 a 25-year-old African American named Ahmaud Arbery was shot and killed by two white Americans for simply jogging in a Georgia neighborhood. A second black man was also killed by police On May 25, 2020. A Minneapolis police officer killed George Floyd, a 46-year-old African American, by kneeling on his neck for 8 minutes and 46 seconds. George Floyd was accused of using counterfeit money to buy things from a food market. After the cashier called the cops on Floyd, four Minneapolis police officers arrived at the scene. When the officer tried to take Floyd into the police vehicle. Floyd resisted the arrest that’s when an officer named Derek Chauvin, pinning Floyd to the ground and putting his knee on Floyd’s neck for more than 8 minutes. while the other 3 officers were watching until it appeared that Floyd lost consciousness and died. The same day Floyd died all four officers were fired and arrested for first-degree murder and abetting second-degree murder. But at the same time, people were outraged and started protesting in all the cities of America. people sought justice for the death of Ahmed, Floyd, and police brutality

by applying the Black Lives Matter movement once again. According to CBS News “Using databases from Mapping Police Violence and The Washington Post, CBS News has compiled a list of 164 Black men and women who were killed by police from January 1 to August 31, 2020. Many of the cases remain under investigation”. This shows African Americans are being killed constantly by police as a result of discrimination

Finally, Muslims and African Americans are some of the groups that are being treated unfairly in American society due to the religion they follow and the color of their skin. Also, Several other groups are still discriminated against, and these must be addressed to the public to make a change for the people that are still discriminated against in today’s society. such as Mexicans, who are stereotyped as bringing drugs and problems, as well as Asians, who are still facing a lot of hatred following the covid 19 pandemics because people are misguided and believe that Asians are the source of the pandemic. It’s heartbreaking to see people come from all over the world in search of a better future, only to face discrimination
